About Reggaeton Music
Hispanic Market Product Placement for 2005 / 2006
Daddy Yankee's "Barrio Fino" became the first reggaeton album to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart. As a movement, reggaeton has been bubbling under the surface for at least 10 years in Puerto Rico. There, artists have been recording and selling their albums independently, with little radio or media support until last year.
But during the past 12 months, the genre -- a blend of dancehall, tropical and hip-hop elements -- has single-handedly shaken up radio in the United States, reinvigorated sales of Latin music and crossed over into the mainstream. In addition, labels across the board are vying to sign and develop new talent, anticipating even further growth for the genre.
That growth has accelerated exponentially as the radio landscape changes, with 17 U.S. stations -- including former English-language outlets -- having switched to rhythmic Latin formats with reggaeton-dominated playlists. During the past six months, in any given week, three to five of the top 10 titles on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart have been reggaeton.

Emmys En Español
The National Television Academy (NATAS) will stage the first Emmys En Español in San Antonio, Texas on Friday, June 3rd to recognize leading Hispanics in the Spanish language television business of the United States.
Those prominent individuals honored will be nominated by the NATAS Organizing Committee of Emmys En Español, chaired by Raul Mateu. The full committee (see below) consists of distinguished Hispanics in different aspects of the Spanish language media business. After a series of deliberations, the Committee will recommend to the National Awards Committee of the National Television Academy those individuals to be honored. An announcement of the honorees will follow this spring prior to the event.
According to Peter O. Price, President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Television Academy, “It is our mission to recognize excellence in television through the Emmy awards. Our National Awards have, on occasion, and our Regional Awards regularly recognize achievement in Spanish language television. The Emmys En Español will now elevate that recognition in order to honor how prominent members of the Spanish language community have contributed to make this sector one of the fastest growing and most robust segments of the United States television industry.”
