Brazilian Food May Be the Next Mexican
The next big thing in ethnic foods is south of the border , but it’s not in Mexico. Brazilian cuisine is on the way up according to Tom Vierhile, executive editor of Productscan Online.
“Although few are going to say that Brazil and Brazilian cuisine are going to replace Mexican tastes and flavors anytime soon, a steady advance in Brazilian products suggests that Brazil may be in the formative stages of becoming the next Mexico for food and beverage makers in the United States.” Signs of this trend can certainly be found. For example, Brazil’s number one beer, Brahma Beer, is being launched in 15 countries including the U.S., while Cachaca, a white spirit product from sugar cane, is already popular in trendy bars and restaurants. Brazilian fruits are also of interest to food and beverage makers, with guarana being used in anything from energy drinks to yogurt to chocolate bars. Finally, more churrascaria-style restaurants are surfacing, serving up spicy grilled meats made famous in Brazilian steakhouses. (Food Business Review Online, May 16, 2005)
