Offsite Employee Recognition Study

A recent study by Maritz Incentives found that employees who work offsite, such as telecommuters and salespeople with home offices, say get less recognition from their employers than the regular in-office staff. According to a Maritz Poll, 42 percent of offsite employees believe onsite staff is recognized more often than they are. A virtually identical number say they would be "very to extremely likely" to leave their current employer if a similar job with similar pay becomes available.

"Companies need to be careful to share recognition with offsite employees," says Paula Godar, director of marketing communications of St. Louis-based Maritz Incentives. "This is more small items or just 'thank you' than true incentive programs. They are not around for the manager to walk down the hall to say 'good job.'"

The numbers certainly bear this out: 71 percent of offsite employees said intangible rewards like praise very to extremely important, but only 40 percent say they receive it frequently, and 24 percent say seldom or never do.

To ensure offsite employees get the positive feedback they crave, Maritz suggests that online communications provide an excellent way of communicating praise. Customized e-cards and certificates can be set up without too much difficulty. Offline, anything from gift cards to a package with balloons is an effective and inexpensive way to say thank you, Godar adds. Finally, it is important to bring people in regularly for key meetings and functions, where they can be recognized in front of peers. Of course, how frequently depends on how far from the office they are.
