Freddi Gonzalez Atlanta Braves Manager
Beisbol - Former Florida Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez will be named to replace Bobby Cox as the Atlanta Braves' new skipper, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported on Wednesday.
Gonzalez's appointment had been expected but still marks a landmark for the franchise after one of the most successful and longest eras under one manager in big-league baseball.
Cox, 69, is stepping down after 25 years as the Braves' manager, winning five National League pennants and one World Series.
Gonzalez, 46, worked as Atlanta third base coach during the 2003-2006 seasons. He became favourite for the job in June when the Marlins fired him after a three-year tenure managing the club.
An official announcement on the appointment of Gonzalez, who was born in Cuba, was expected at a news conference on Thursday, the newspaper said.
Cox managed his last game on Monday when the Braves were eliminated from the NL Division Series by the San Francisco Giants.
He guided the team to a World Series championship in 1995 and to 14 division titles. He was named manager of the year four times.
Cox led the Braves from 1978-1981, then managed the Toronto Blue Jays from 1982-1985. He rejoined the Braves as general manager that year and in 1990 resumed as team manager
