Unemployed Benefits Debit Cards
Alaska Offering Unemployed Benefits On Debit Cards - People receiving unemployment benefits in the state of Alaska will have the option of accessing their funds through debit cards under a program expected to be launched in May. The state is phasing out paper checks, which are too costly to print and mail.

“It is very costly to print checks these days," a representative of Alaska said. "It is burdensome. And it takes a long time to reconcile a returned check, accounting mistakes, or overpayments if somebody received a benefit check they weren't eligible for.  A debit card is so easy, it's the next best thing to a direct deposit into a checking account.”

Debit card recipients do not pay a surcharge when using the debit card at a store to buy goods. The state is hoping about 30 percent of recipients will transition to the debit cards over the next six months.

This program is catching on throughout the United States, as many states are considering the savings of converting from paper to plastic. Last year the state of Alaska paid $120 million in unemployment benefits. Over 45,000 people signed up for the payments for at least one week in 2008.

If you live in a state not offering this program, a general purpose prepaid debit MasterCard can fulfill all your needs for easy unemployment payments and direct deposits. Once funds are loaded on your prepaid debit card, you can us those funds to pay bills, send money, shop at merchants accepting MasterCard, and withdraw cash at an ATM.
