The main plaza, the church, and the Government Palace - buildings you will find together in every Mexican city or town you go to. This is the Centro Historico (historic center), a public space for self expression, a place for concerts, art exhibitions, performances and events. You will find it everywhere because in the Centro is where everything began and where colonial and modern Mexican culture meets.
The most important celebration for Mexico’s Independence Day takes place in Mexico City’s historic center, the Zocalo, also known as Plaza de la Constitucion (Constitution Plaza). Every 15th of September, more than 15,000 Mexicans gather at around 6pm and wait to see the nation’s President, who every year at 11pm appears with his family at the Government Palace’s balcony to remember the night when the independence movement began.
Just as Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla did almost 200 years ago, the current President repeats the cry of Dolores: “Viva Hidalgo, Viva Morelos, Vivan los heroes de la independencia, Viva Mexico, Viva Mexico, Viva Mexico.” All those who are gathered at the Zocalo, as well as all of those celebrating in other plazas around the country, watching the celebration at home or enjoying the moment at a restaurant or bar, echo the president, “Viva!” At the end, the President proudly waves the flag and rings the same bell that Father Hidalgo rang to launch the movement that resulted in freedom from the Spanish rule 11 years later..
The fireworks announce when the Fiesta begins; “Noches Mexicanas” (Mexican Nights) take place in different hotels around the Zocalo with the city lit up in the flag’s colors. In the streets you can find all kinds of traditional food such as pozole, quesadillas, gorditas, tostadas, buñuelos and lots more.
