Wow! Verizon donated $50,000 to West Virginia in 2004 so that 1,000 low-income people could take the GED. If Verizon could invest $50,000 in a small state, we can imagine the potential investment it could make in larger states like New York. Elected officials and GED administrators should use this little known fact to help mobilize low-income people across the United States and Puerto Rico. Let us learn from this important historical event in West Virginia. By the way, WAL-MART donated $1,000 within two weeks to a GED project that I gave to the Central Islip Library around that time and it would have donated more money based on matching funds. Take this important information home to help low-income people in the United States. Use this information all across America.

Michigan is below the national average in people taking and passing the GED in 2006. It gave out 9,839 diplomas to people who passed and its passing percentage was at the national level. It was below the national average in completion.

Mike James, NBA basketball player, hit it right on the head when he told me that too many youth are getting the GED in prison. Mike James has been giving back to the Amityville community for years, but the real “Amityville Horror” is that too many youth have dropped of high school and not gotten their GED diploma. It was great meeting with Mike James.

Let’s high five African-American youth all over our nation and tell them RUN DMC or R U in Need of a Diploma My Child. Let us begin marketing the GED and keeping kids in school in a different way.

My friend Larry Love, the Hip Hop legend, told me that a pastor recently told a crowd at a rally against the violence told the people get your GED and Larry told me that he wished I could have been there.
