English Please GED Please

New York Newsday reporter Juan Moreno Gonzales wrote an article on July 9, 2006 about English instruction on Long Island. He did some good reporting, but I feel the public has to take a look at the thoughts below too. Something is wrong with the American dream on Long Island. Things are not as bad as they were in New Orleans when the levees broke, but the educational levees are damaged in New York (48th in the nation in graduation rate and below the national average in GED).

Why are Americans so English only crazy when professors know that people learn English faster these days than in previous generations? We are obviously being led by people who are not competent to lead us. Do you think it actually costs $5.80 per student per hour for ESL instruction? Check again. Does that division take into account student absences from class and other items like closings for snow storms? I doubt it. Are the BOCES programs steering Hispanics and Haitians into GED in their languages? The answer is probably in very small numbers. As high school graduation rates decline on Long Island and the numbers of GED diplomas do not rise, our concentration on English only is foolish and not really consistent with the American dream. New York is below the national average in GED’s. Wake up and mobilize your family and community to obtain a GED and you will see benefits that you have never realized before in America. Help Hispanics to earn the GED in Spanish as they learn the English language.
