GED at Rikers Island Prison

By Profesor Martin Danenberg
“El Quijote del GED”
I went to Rikers Correctional Facility to take photos of the banner of Captain Bonilla’s radio show for inmates and the families on Radio Vision Cristina (Vapors of Faith), but I ended up speaking about GED to 31 inmates, approximately 10 of whom need a GED.
I met an African American who has a CDL license and needs the GED to get a job. I told him and a few others that the GED can be passed easily by knowing measurements and the basic operations well, by
writing an essay of about five paragraphs, and by knowing how to read effectively. I made 31 new friends about the inmates. My information can be passed out to the inmates in the future to motivate them effectively to begin their studies and take the test as quickly as possible. This information can help tens of thousands more inmates pass the GED in prisons each year. The same information can be passed on to their loved ones outside of jail to make them stronger and more hopeful about their future.
