Washington, D.C.--(HISPANIC PR WIRE)--June 30, 2006--One hundred and thirty high school students from Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia will have a rare opportunity to learn about college and careers at the third annual Greater Washington Hispanic Youth Symposium, July 6-8 at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia.

The Hispanic College Fund’s Greater Washington Hispanic Youth Symposium begins Thursday July 6th with a challenge to the students to frame issues that affect them and to design solutions. Other topics covered the first day include: foundations for personal success, the importance of team building and networks, as well as exploration of talent, art and public speaking.

On Friday July 7th students will gain a greater understanding of how to choose a college, prepare for college, write a powerful essay, and finance college. All of the college sessions will be facilitated by admissions officers from top colleges across the country and Hispanic College Fund Scholars. Later in the second day the students will learn about professional career tracks from Lockheed Martin, Kaiser Permanente, Capital One and the Federal Government.

The final day, Saturday July 8th, is dedicated to celebrating their accomplishments and awarding more than $28,000 in scholarships and grants.

“Our message to the Hispanic youth attending the symposium is to complete high school and pursue college degrees,” said George Cushman, Director of Development for the Hispanic College Fund and Executive Director, Hispanic Youth Symposium. “The Hispanic Youth Symposium provides help in many ways but it’s the partnerships that provide long term support.“

Over the three days more than 150 volunteers (25 are alumni of the Hispanic Youth Symposium or the Hispanic College Fund), 30 colleges and universities, 20 partner organizations and 50 role models will stress academic achievement, community service and personal responsibility to the students. “The supporting nonprofit organizations, corporations and federal agencies provide an environment of support for young Hispanics who have the potential to become ideal candidates for internships or other hiring programs in a few years,” said Jeffrey Vargas, Manager of Diversity Programs for the National Nuclear Security Agency, Founder and Chair of the Hispanic Youth Symposium.

Additional Hispanic Youth Symposia: The second annual Maryland Hispanic Youth Symposium will be held at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Baltimore, Maryland on July 13-15, 2006 and the first Fresno, California Hispanic Youth Symposium will be held at California State University – Fresno on August 4-6, 2006.
