Hugo Chavez GED Revolution Now
A million dollars for parades in Brazil. Scholarships for college education. Billions of dollars of oil profits into 16 countries. Paying off Argentina’s 2 billion dollar debt. Flying a Salvadoran for eye surgery. Poverty is one-third according to the government and above fifty percent by Caracas’ Catholic University. Sent 2 million to tsunami socked Indonesia. Defending Iran’s nuclear program and courting China trade.
“But we use Venezuelan oil for peace, for love, for lifting people from their misery,” President Hugo Chavez. He has called President Bush a “terrorist” and a “drunkard” among other things. He is buying 100,000 Kalashnikov assault rifles and hopes to buy MiG aircraft from Russia.
We in the United States have done all of those things listed above and much more. And yes we build good will with millions of people when we do. We have not bought the rifles and the aircraft because we have the ability to develop our own.
President George W. Bush has one of the lowest ratings of any President in our history. We do not need Hugo Chavez to tell us about our president. The democratic process is going to take its course. Bush must be replaced and maybe Chavez will be replaced in the near future. Both Bush and Chavez have done nothing to promote the GED in their respective countries. This is unfortunate because it would promote better families, communities, and the church too.
Here are some ideas for the people of Venezuela and other countries to absorb.
Many years ago in the New York City school system, we had a tuition free program for all of the students matriculated in the City Colleges of New York. Scholarships were unnecessary because the schools were tuition free. All of this came to end because the government of New York City faced bankruptcy.
Poor people in the United States who cannot finish middle school and high school, may take a seven hour examination in English, Spanish, and French to obtain a high school equivalency diploma. They may enter the university system and get a better job with this diploma. The Surgeon General of the United States and the President of the Hispanic National Bar Association are two Hispanics who have risen to high positions because of this examination called the GED. Venezuela needs this examination much more than evening high schools. The GED is fast, effective, inexpensive when done right, and can revolutionize a society. What Chavez is doing seems to be pretty much what most countries have done and progress is slow.
Venezuela is lucky to have such rich oil reserves. This gives Chavez his power, but one thing we have learned from history is that the power of the dollar, franc, pound, peso, etc. corrupts people. This is a major problem world wide. This is really what brought down communism and it probably will bring down Chavez after his years of moderate success. Chavez has to do much more for the poor people of his country and use the wealth of his country more effectively to help others. He can focus on helping Brazilians here in the United States who arrived uneducated and who need a GED. Educación Sí! Samba No!
He can help 7 million Hispanics who suffer due to lack of education here. Guns and Butter, Oil and Education!
