Samuel Gompers: His Truth Lives On
By Profesor Martin Danenberg
“El Quijote del GED”
Your GED Hotline is the GEDHOTLINE, but there are other things in life that are important that I write about. These words of Samuel Gompers appear inside the conference room of the AFL-CIO Building in Washington, D. C. and it is important for us to know much more than that he was just a labor leader. It disturbs me that students in our schools have retaliated against immigrants who have demonstrated for their rights. If those foreign born students, inappropriately, caused problems for school staff, two wrongs do not make a right. These children are misled by the racist opinions of their parents and neighbors. These children do not learn from our history. President George W. Bush proclaimed the work of the 9-11 conspirators “evil” and we, too, have had our own “evil” history and “evil” current events.
The words of Samuel Gompers ring in our ears. Crime is down in major cities, but our jails are full. Samuel Gomper’s cry for more school houses will become reality as class size gets reduced and smaller schools are created to improve the quality of education. Education is often one of the top three issues still for people and it will become more critical as people are discovering in local communities and with the help of Oprah Winfrey and Bill Gates that there is a dropout crisis in this country. Americans are working longer hours again to make ends meet or improve their families. Justice has been given to many people, but it falls far short of others. America is not the land of opportunity that it once was, but success stories still exist. Oprah Winfrey and Bill Gates are clearly two of those success stories.
We are looking at a world where there will be more outsourcing of jobs and more pensions will go down the drain. Life is not what it once was in the United States. It has been changing since I can remember. Made in America was replaced a long time ago by made in Japan, made in Germany, made in Korea, and made in China. Many countries have come along since that have taken jobs away from Americans, but life goes on as we try to adjust. Made in Korea will be replaced in a decade or more by something else.
We can stop and think about what Gompers wrote and we can stop and think about other ideas too. The resolution of the undocumented immigrant problem is one. Senator Hillary Clinton and Congressman Peter King have been arguing and both claim that God is on their side. If Jesus were here to help the undocumented immigrants would he be arrested, has been asked in newspapers. My question is would that make us Americans or would it make us Romans. Not too long ago, I recall a nation absorbed by a controversial movie called “The Passion” produced by Mel Gibson. “He died for our sins” are the words that we all know so perfectly well. Each blow that Christ received is symbolic of how we treat decent, hard working people. Most of the people receiving those blows in the United States happen to be Christians too. And it should not matter if they are Christians, Jews, Muslims, or Buddhists. American elected officials are overwhelmingly Christian, but American Christianity reflects the negative things mentioned by Gompers. God Bless America! I have heard someone say this year that the decline of education began with the integration of the South. I have heard another man say that people from other countries who have experience in police work or military work should not get work credit upon applying for a job with the police department in Suffolk County. This man defended himself by saying that tax payer money should not be used that way. Would we ask the greatest general of another country to start his military life over in the United States as a private? Or ask the greatest foreign surgeon who can save lives to start the first class in medical school in order to become licensed?
Equivalencies make the world go round. We accept diplomas of people from other countries and they accept ours. You would not hesitate to go to a doctor to be treated for something serious if you needed help in France or Guatemala, because their doctors are highly trained. Our teachers can teach abroad and people are hired from other countries to teach here. We also have student exchange programs where the students’ high school diplomas are not scrutinized. Americans are full of opinions that hold back society.
Three years ago I attended a rally for immigrants in Nassau and I told Hispanic leaders that immigrants can bring this economy to its knees by stopping work in the restaurants. This and much more are about to happen and it will hurt our nation. Our elected officials are betraying the nation again. They have mistreated Irish, Jews, Japanese, Chinese, Puerto Ricans, Italians, African Americans, Mexicans and other Hispanics. Times have changed and a new power is being unleashed. If we all respect each other and respect the desire of families to be united without saying God Bless America and get these people away from us, we will build a stronger nation and keep our nation away from a deep recession.
I thank my friends at LCLAA or the Latin Council for Latin-American Advancement, again, for their kindness in letting me use their wonderful conference room for my GED Roundtable.
