Two Million Aspirantes

“El Quijote del GED”

There are millions of potential “Aspirantes” among those people who have dropped out of school. Hector Gesualdo, Executive Director of Aspira of New York, has become a great friend. Even though his mission is to help the students from kindergarten to high school, he has taken on another, extremely important role with passion to aid people who have been less fortunate than those who have finished high school. He has helped conduct two GED Roundtables and a very important Latino Roundtable of New York is about to take place. This Roundtable will unite Hispanics, just as recent immigrant demonstrations have done.

There are four hundred thousand “Aspirantes” in the United States, the invited guests were told at the Aspira Luncheon in the Pierre Hotel in New York City. This event showcased talented students who performed, students who have been helped by Aspira and who are helping others, and people in the corporate world who have made contributions and commitments to Aspira.

A film was shown detailing the activities of Aspira. Young people may be shy at first but they quickly take on leadership qualities as they grow. Students conduct meetings, tutor young children, and give something back to the community. Antonia Pantoja’s dream gets realized as each person tries to excel at what he or she does and reveals his or her passion to help others.

At the table, three students told me about the great need for GED. One student’s mother has failed the GED and needs help. The other has a sister who needs a GED. The third simply mentioned that many students have dropped out of her school. They were the only students at the table. We will give help to the family members and friends who need help as soon as possible. We hope that a large portion of the people who need a GED will contact Aspira of New York.

I give thanks to Hector Gesualdo of Aspira and all of the organizations and individuals that have attended my roundtables, including the Congress of the United States and the members of the New York State Legislature.
