A RECENT REPORT ON GED INSTRUCTION IN NEW YORK CITY

By Profesor Martin Danenberg “El Quijote del GED”

As the GED Program of New York City waits for 120 hours of instruction to assess this student’s skills, a young woman may fail the GED. I gave her important advice on the phone that the teacher did not give her in three weeks in class.

The Department of Education reported last week to the City Council of New York that instruction has been greatly improved, but what do they know about GED instruction. This was not made clear in their report. We have to know what changes have been made in instruction.

This young woman contacted me weeks ago about getting her GED and she decided to enroll in a GED class in New York City. Has instruction improved in the GED programs? She told me that she has been in class for three weeks and the teacher is concentrating on the slower learners. She needs that GED soon to get a job in a college, and she took my advice and got a date to take the test.

This young woman is concerned about the math and composition for the writing skills test and I found out over the phone, what I suspected, and that is she is getting inadequate help. If the teacher had conducted a proper interview with her, the teacher could be helping her with important instruction and strategies since she is taking the test in two weeks. Has instruction improved? Based on this information, I have to say no!
