ALARMING 2009 GED STATISTICS

By Profesor Martin Danenberg "El Quijote del GED"

There were 28,345 GED passers in 2006 and now there are only 27,815 passers in 2009 in New York State. One of the reports that helped wake up New York reveals there were 31,097 in 2007. It has been reported to me that people who are undocumented are being turned away from the GED test and this is under investigation (those people are Hispanics). The sad state of GED continues well into 2010.

The low passing rates continue to affect New York (53.8). There could be a turning point in helping New York City as my Title 1 Parent Involvement partner Queen Makkada gets the message out to all District Parent Advisory Councils in New York City. She will be telling the entire city that city council and the GED Testing of New York State are calling for practice testing to bring up the passing rate. The practice test and the badly needed program can be purchased with Title 1 funds for the parents. The sad state of GED can be turned into the happy state of GED by getting the program. Washington, D.C. has a 53.5 percent passing rate. Alabama has a 57.3 percent passing rate. Puerto Rico has a 35.1 percent passing rate. If the New York Times reads the passing rate for Puerto Rico, that low rate is caused by the fact that people in Puerto Rico are still so dominant in Spanish and candidates must pass the English exam in order to earn a diploma. This requirement has existed since 1949 and a bill has been proposed to end this requirement for immigrants . That bill gives "El Quijote del GED" credit for inspiring the bill. I hope to do a conference in October with the government of Puerto Rico to help Puerto Rico. My new business card with include the Puerto Rican flag telling you how pleased I am. Puerto Rico had only 1,453 diplomas in 2009.

Another alarming figure for 2009 is that only 2 people took the GED in French in Florida. I warned the Haitians at the Haitian Diaspora Forum that hardly anyone knows about the French GED in the state of Florida and the number dropped from 4 to 2 after 2008. Are Haitians listening to me and helping their own people with the French GED? Were the 2 who took the test Haitian? Only 25,906 took the Spanish GED in 2009, up from 24,523 in 2008. These numbers show the crisis in those minority communities. Across our nation only 448,131 passed the GED and that number should be between 555,000 and 600,000 realistically speaking. Ideally the number should be 900,000 in order to make America better.
