EDUARDO FIGUEROA FORMER NEW YORK YANKEES PITCHER
By Profesor Martin Danenberg
"El Quijote del GED"
The staff of Lupi's Restaurant was very cooperative and I got the opportunity to sit down in a quiet place with Ed Figueroa to talk about the Generation of Sports and Education. Ed Figueroa is concerned about the quality of education in Puerto Rico and he knows that the GED is important in Puerto Rico and will be important in the Dominican Republic. He knows that many of the baseball players do not speak English and it would be helpful to them if they did. Lupi's restaurants are in different areas of San Juan, but I talked to Ed Figueroa in Isla Verde, just outside the El San Juan Tower. It was just great being with Ed Figueroa and I will contact him later on as my planned educational conference progresses. This conference will be in the Dominican Republic in Punta Cana. I hope that Puerto Rico's baseball stars support the effort and then we can help Puerto Rico as well. Youth who play baseball should be finishing up their education as well as advancing toward the big leagues.
Bryce Harper got his GED and went to a community college to continue his studies. Harper was on the cover of Sports' Illustrated. This youth can throw out runners on his knees behind the plate and hit 550 foot home runs. Bryce Harper signed with the Washington Nationals (number one pick) for almost $10 million. Passing the GED was a requirement for Harper to play college baseball.
