William Bell, Sean Bell’s father, was the first speaker at my educational conference. His son was taken from him just before his son’s wedding. His wife, Valerie Bell, also spoke. Thomas Sapp, whose son was killed in Nassau County, was a guest speaker, too. His son was taken from him just because he went to the store. Later on Davina Perez arrived and spoke about her commitment to ending the violence. She was shot at 6 times and knows that we have to do something. Alphonso Bonilla arrived and told the youth to stay out of Rikers. These people are doing their share to cut down on the violence. Alphonso Bonilla has cut down on the violence in Rikers’ Correctional Facility. All of these people are changing lives and cutting down on the violence. Together we can influence the White House and the Department of Justice to do things the right way to make sure that we significantly cut down on the murder rate across the United States. Harvard University just had a well publicized murder and we want to make sure that this does not happen in our schools or in our communities again. I am telling you that we are going to the White House to fight for change.

Larry Love was talking about his national house-calls program. Yes doctors will be making house-calls again under a new national plan. I started telling Chancellor Klein and others at a meeting in his office about the importance of expanding medical services beyond the school nurse. Services that we had back in the day, services that could lead to more children getting well faster and being in school much more. For adults I think about how my own mother could have been saved by a simple house call, especially with all of the portable emergency medical equipment that is available today. I told Larry Love that he has medical house-calls and I have GED house-calls.

A really important surprise came from the New York City Department of Education Office for Family Engagement and Advocacy. We thank the efforts of Queen Makkada who has introduced me to the C-PAC and Chancellor Klein and his staff. Yes Chancellor Joel Klein’s staff sent a representative to my event and that means we can build a strong relationship with the entire school system, affecting families and communities and not one by one either. Ewel Napier spoke about parental engagement. I call upon all people who read this article or any of my articles to bring about greater parental participation and involvement in the schools. We, especially, want to bring more fathers into the schools. Ralph Greer spoke about computer programs. The Alpha Obama Club spoke about the “Read to Succeed” program of the Hip Hop Summit Youth Council. Thomas Humphrey came in from Amityville and spoke about the Long Island Men’s Center, a program of reentry. The National Income Life Insurance Company was represented by Dwayne Mayo and his kids talked about skelly, the popular game that baby boomers played when they were kids.

Young and old were united, talking about education, including reading, dropout prevention, and GED. Mrs. Bell had to return to speak and tell us about the programs, including GED program that her foundation will begin. There was a great commitment by everyone to work together in the future and not just make a speech, be done, and perhaps not work together again. I have never seen so many people in one conference who want to work together in the future.

The New York Times was cited in the New York Teacher magazine for commenting on Secretary Arne Duncan’s suggested rebranding of the No Child Left Behind Act. There can only be one rebranding that fits the entire nation and every community in that nation and that is Do The Right Thing: No Person Left Behind.
