In Uniondale High School, I told a large audience of students that I am the Vice-Chairman of Operation SNUG and educator of the Salvadoran community. Those students did not know that I am the educator working with the government of El Salvadoran and its consulates. I was supposed to be a panelist at this meeting, but something fouled up that plan. So I had to take the law into my hands and get things done my way.

I was sitting near a student that confronted the panelists by telling them straight out that, he felt, they were giving them were words (and no more). I have to admit that I understand where he was coming from and his point will be made at conferences like these all across the United States. I called that youth over in front of everyone and asked him and the hundreds of students watching what they would do to prevent their little brothers and sisters from joining gangs, getting involved with guns and drugs, and dropping out of school. I told them that the crisis we have is largely about the combination of low graduation rates from high school and an inadequate number of people getting the GED. This hurts people’s chances from getting the best construction jobs and jobs in good companies and the government offices. The hundreds of students who held up their hands when asked if they want jobs now must conclude that a diploma is very important in our society.

I wish that I could have told them that there are hundreds of opportunities working with me in the field of GED. This event was organized by Thomas Sapp of the Kareen D Sapp Foundation who wants to uplift our youth. I can provide them with an economic opportunity.

William Bell, the father of Sean Bell, told the audience of youth about the pain he feels every day. This point was hammered home by others who said that the pain never goes away. People do not get over the loss of a loved one and Assistant District Attorney René Fiechter advised the youth never to tell anyone to get over it. This was a very important lesson for our youth.
