GEORGE ALLEN WRITES ABOUT PARENT INVOLVEMENT IN SCHOOLS

By Profesor Martin Danenberg "El Quijote del GED"

Former Virginia governor and senator George Allen has a book out called What Washington Can Learn From the World of Sports and in the education section (see the index) he writes about parent involvement in schools. The story runs that parents signed up to attend an award session where their children would receive $10 for each school exam that they passed. It was expected that dozens would sign up and it turned out that 500 people signed up. This difference is obviously revolutionary and deserves to be shared with people all across Virginia, the United States, and the rest of the world. Parent involvement and financial rewards for children who do well on their tests seem to be his answer. I know of an Hispanic woman who fought back against the status quo or people who felt that Hispanic parents would not get involved in their education of their children. There was no financial stimulus involved at all, but she held a meeting on the weekend and 150 parents came out. I also know that there are other ways to bring parents into school that have worked at no cost to anyone.

George Allen's book is on sale. I have a GED Practice Test program that empowers parents and I would love to know if George Allen would agree to write about that program, which would make African-Americans, Hispanics, and others more competitive. You see there are millions of adults that cannot compete because they dropped out of school. This is a much better way to help America because it teaches parents to fish instead of providing them with fish. It appears to me that George Allen has taken a page from the Democrats and by distributing a little more wealth to parents he has committed a faux pas that Conservatives must not admire just because he wrote about it. We need much more information to decide if the idea is credible, especially in these days of budget crises and deep recession.
