Alphonso Bonilla, founder of Mothers Against Peer Pressure, and several students from the New York Urban Ministries were out on Hazen Street praying for the loved ones of people in Rikers' Correctional Facility. I was invited to talk to people about running to get their GED diploma.
I had a wonderful conversation with a Cuban immigrant who told me he came here at the age of ten and completed high school. He objected strongly to the fact that his son is up to one o'clock in the morning doing needless homework and he may be right. He has a construction job and he is in the union. He knows how important the GED is to the Hispanic community and he will be spreading the word about "El Quijote del GED" for a long, long time.
I thank Alphonso Bonilla for his effort to change lives. Now he just has to get Mayor Michael Bloomberg to permit him to do a concert in Rikers' with the participation of Radio Vision Cristiana. The concert will be broadcast to Hispanics all over New York, the United States, Puerto Rico, and countries down to Ecuador. This concert will give a powerful message to people in El Salvador and other countries, where gang activity is enormous and bring hope to the youth so that they will not follow others down the wrong path. New York City will benefit greatly from it! Let's cut the bureaucratic red tape!
