You may think that the GED accounts for one of every hundred diplomas annually, but this is not true at all. The GED is so critical to success of our nation and we have failed for forty years to mobilize enough people. Actually the GED accounts for between 14 to 16 of every hundred diplomas annually and it should be 25-30 of every hundred. Our cities and rural areas are in desperate need of help now. Please spread the word.
President Barack Obama mentioned Bill Thompson’s report showing that African-Americans are four times more likely to be unemployed in New York City (but see what Krystal Serrano is doing about this). I have been writing about the City of New York and No Child Left Behind and mayoral control for some time now. Finally the graduation rate went up slightly in New York but the loss of GED diplomas has been ignored and that has definitely impacted on the high unemployment rate among African-Americans. I do not support Bill Thompson or Mayor Bloomberg and I think you know why. New York City spends $900 million annually for workforce development, giving money from our treasury to so many organizations that have led New York toward 1.6 million young people and adults who have no high school diploma or GED and kept the city well below the national average on the GED. I have the report that was written for the mayor’s own agency that you should read as a model to guide you in cities where you live. Krystal Serrano has brought the GED into her city council race in the Bronx in two ways. She writes on her website for all residents of her community to see, “I have worked with the Welfare and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) recipient of New York City and Westchester County. I have supported the General Equivalency Diploma (GED) program to where I am working with Professor Martin Danenberg to secure the program in Jamaica, West Indies. I have worked with the Work Release Program of the city to where the incarcerated would come out to gain employment. I have worked diligently to bring to life the Community Flea Market, in Queens giving opportunities to individuals to have a source of income. “
President Obama stated that African-Americans are 5 times more likely to see the inside of a prison. He stated that HIV devastates the African-American community. He mentioned the inequalities in school and after school support. He told everyone that education makes you better able to compete and that Al Sharpton, Mayor Bloomberg, and Newt Gingrich agree that there is no stronger weapon for people. He mentioned the door of No Return and we must reverse our youth from violence and despair. He urged parents to attend parent-teacher conferences, read to the children, and help with the homework. The acquisition of the GED by parents and adults would be a great stimulus to cut down on the education gap. GED study provides many of the basics parents need to help their children.
Krystal Serrano was a keynote speaker at my “People’s GED Summit” in the Bronx. The current Director of Urban Policy in the White House, Adolfo Carrión, gave me the rotunda of the Supreme Court Building for that event and he is my heart for doing it. The GED is entering other races in New York City and within months, I predict that even Mayor Bloomberg and Bill Thompson will open up their eyes as frustrated voters and residents of New York City demand action. See what Krystal Serrano expressed in her speech below.
When we talk about “General Equivalency Diploma” or “General Educational Development” --- GED --- as it is known to many, it is a program that certifies the taker has attained high school-level academic skills. It is recorded that more than 15 million people have received a GED credential since the program began inception. One in every seven Americans with high school credentials received the GED, as well as one in twenty college students. 70% of GED recipients complete at least the 10th grade before leaving school, and the same number are over the age of 19, with the average age being 24.
Persons who do not hold a traditional high school diploma are eligible to take the GED tests. At a New York City hearing, the Department of Education revealed that there is 70,000 over-age or under-credited students in the public school system, but only 13,000 seats in programs designed to help get them to graduation. There are another 68,000 students who have already dropped out.
The 68,000 students who have dropped out of school will at some point in their lives seek to acquire their GED. Adults often cannot or will not return to high school, so receiving the GED allows them to demonstrate that they possess a skill level comparable to that of an average high school graduate. Common reasons for GED recipients not having received a high school diploma includes individuals who have not had the opportunity to further their education due to taking care of a loved one, may be a (father, mother, sister, brother etc.) in order to survive in this struggle of existence, you have the many immigrants who have migrated to the United States and now calling the Bronx, home.
According to the current census bureau, here in the Bronx we have a large amount of foreign born families residing within the various communities, 22% are of African descendents, 48.8% are of Hispanic or Latino origin and 24.7% of an unidentified race (I can tell you that the unidentified race is from the Caribbean islands ranging from the Leeward islands to South America) 30.7% of the families in this borough are under the poverty level.
In today’s workforce environment, the majority of the employer has indicated that a GED credential is required for employment or promotional advancement. As we work hand-in-hand with our community leaders, politicians. Faith-based leaders and educators we join forces to work for the common interest of our future leaders of tomorrow.
