"El Quijote del GED"

President Fernandez spoke about education and the future of the Dominican Republic last night at Hostos Community College. I thank my friends at Hostos for this event and permitting me to attend. I will be speaking about education and the future in Higuey and Santo Domingo beginning Sunday and I have been asked to stop off in San Pedro de Macoris. Please see my article in Spanish on baseball foundations.

The president spoke about building a relationship with Haiti by building a university in Haiti. This university will be completed in 2012.

English language acquisition is badly needed. Far too few Dominicans are fluent in English and the country cannot attract calling centers, which India is known for. Making Dominicans bilingual is a priority to attract investments. I have a book that I intend to publish soon in the Dominican Republic.

Universal primary education is being achieved (with exceptions). The focus will be on universal secondary education. Here I am shouting about the GED for everyone who has not finished high school, greater parent involvement in the schools, and dropout prevention.

It is true that the country has come a long way since Trujillo was ousted and it will be fifty years soon, but progress really can be much greater than it is.
