QUEEN MAKKADA INVITES MARTIN TO NAACP MEETING

Let’s high five African-American youth all over our nation and tell them RUN DMC or R U in Need of a Diploma My Child. Let us begin marketing the GED and keeping kids in school in a different way.
My friend Larry Love, the Hip Hop legend, told me that a pastor recently told a crowd at a rally against the violence told the people get your GED and Larry told me that he wished I could have been there.
The meeting at the NAACP Chapter in Arverne, Queens was conducted by Ed Williams. Assemblywoman Michelle Titus was present and she gave a report to the people who attended. Andrea Sanders, president and founder of V.O.W. or Victorious Organization of Women and wife of City Councilman James Sanders, Jr., was present. So the message was spread to people who connect to the community, people who provide critical funding and other help. Mr. Williams told the people attending that he was concerned about the violence in the streets and education was really important. I was able to tell Assemblywoman Titus that any recreation program that opens in that neighborhood must have a GED program. Some people agreed with as I spoke more about the GED. When I was asked where GED programs in the district are, Queen Makkada reacted and she insisted that I tell the people about my $35.00 program that she will be providing to parents in the district who participate in the Title 1 Program to empower the parents. We want to eliminate the problem of youth with a basketball and a gun and promote basketball and a diploma. It can be done!
The people insisted that I continue and I told them that the high school dropout rate had increased from 20,000 in 2005 to 21,000 in 2006 and it could be going up. The Chancellor of schools is proud of the accomplishments of the fifth grade students, but more students may be exiting school without a diploma. I quickly told the people that there have been about 50,000 fewer GED diplomas in the state in the last 6 years and that we only help 1 percent of the 2.85 million adults earn a GED in a year.
Since there are around 30,000 diplomas earned across the state in a year and a little more than half of that number can be youth who are 21 and younger, that means there are only 15,000 youth who earn a GED across the state. The city is suffering because we have about 200,000 displaced youth. Even Mayor Bloomberg called this disgraceful. What has he done in the months since he reacted to the media? We should go to his office and ask to see what progress he has made to help the displaced youth of New York City.
I told the people present that the National Urban League has a job program for seniors and we could help seniors across our nation to earn the GED and get training such as CNA and get them jobs that pay $16 an hour instead of the $7.25 that they are paid per hour in NUL programs. One of the community people told me we should be helping the youth with the GED and I replied that the poverty of children and youth is the result of adults not having a GED and we must help the adults to help their children.
GUNS NO! GED YES! VIOLENCE NO! HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA YES! CENTRAL ISLIP HAD A RECENT MURDER AND THAT COMMUNITY NEEDS GED HELP AND DROPOUT PREVENTION NOW AND NOT IN TEN YEARS.
