RAY NEGRON AND GEORGE STEINBRENNER: THEIR INTIMATE STORY

By Profesor Martin Danenberg "El Quijote del GED"

New York Newsday just published stories about Ray Negron and Bill Stimers' intimate relationship with George Steinbrenner. Here are the facts. Ray Negron quit what he was doing "cold turkey" and Stimers ran into mortgage problems long before the home loan crisis.

Ray Negron was caught painting graffiti outside Yankee Stadium. Whether Negron was in a gang or not, I do not know, but her admits that he could have ended up in jail. Negron was promoted after being caught to Yankees' bat boy and he is now 54 and in charge of community outreach including ball player appearances. Brentwood is the home of Bill Stimers who almost lost his home, but Steinbrenner paid off the mortgage and renovated the house.

Brentwood. Back to Brentwood. There the community has been painting fences and buildings to remove the graffiti , graffiti that has made big news. There the gang members still walk the streets, minus some that were arrested. There should be accounting of how many of them have been helped by jobs and education. That is what I was advocating when I met with the community leaders, including the B.R.A.V.E. I want to know how many of the those youth got jobs, jobs that could do for them what Steinbrenner did for Negron. Negron was given one chance and he changed his life and other can do the same thing.

My work is known in the front offices of the Mets and Yankees. The ballplayers, especially the Latino ballplayers, will be finding out about my advocacy. The Dominican flag flies proudly on my business card alongside the flag of El Salvador. Why? Because of the educational campaign that I started that led to my association with President Leonel Fernandez. The Puerto Rican flag will be on my card soon, because a legislator in San Juan, Puerto Rico proposed a change to the Education Act of 1949 and that change was based on my work. Puerto Ricans recognize that immigrants need to be helped and justice is important. The American flag will soon be on my card due to the recognition that I received from the White House Special Commission for the Educational Excellence of the Hispanic Community. It seems to me that I should have been playing ball with Steinbrenner to help people.

By the way, my card is going to have another new item. It is going to say "Ojalá Que Llueva Café Y Educación en el Campo" and I hope that every Hispanic baseball player gets my card to get us into the positive spirit of George Steinbrenner. Enough talk about Seinfeld.
