SEAN BELL’S FAMILY, REVEREND AL SHARPTON AND GED

By Profesor Martin Danenberg
“El Quijote del GED”
Invited by Larry Love, Hip Hop Legend and great GED friend, I was able to meet the family of Sean Bell at their community event in Baisley Park. I discussed my views of what has gone wrong with Sean Bell’s father. We have just seen too much failure for the past forty years and education will play a major role in making things better. We have also great GED failures contributing to employment problems in the African-American community. A great percentage of those people are having problems getting jobs, good jobs, could be resolved by every member of every family getting a diploma.
I had the opportunity to chat with Reverend Al Sharpton. I briefly saw Al Sharpton, for the first time four years ago in Boston during the Democratic National Convention. He had a big smile on his face in 2004 when I told him that Jonathon Sanchez of Eastern Group Publications is my friend. Sharpton and I chatted about the GED disaster in New York State and the loss of about 50,000 diplomas in the last six years. The damage to New York City’s adult community has been great. I also told Sharpton about the GED disaster that existed in New Orleans in the Gulf region before Katrina hit causing a second disaster to many of those same, poor people. The disaster before Katrina is Louisiana and Colorado are about the same in population, but the need for GED in Louisiana was greater, 300,000 greater than in Colorado. Alabama and Mississippi, too, had comparable figures showing that the post Civil Rights era has not been kind to people in that region that have not finished high school.
The ball is now in the court of Governor Paterson, Mayor Bloomberg, and all elected officials to do something great for the people of New York, to do something great for all those communities that need workforce development that can produce great change. It is time for the leaders who do not understand to change. We have to eliminate all of the conditions that lead to tragedies that should not even take place.
I told people about the RUN DMC campaign idea or R U in Need of a Diploma My Child and the great street GED campaign of Queen Makkada who called me one night to help a 26 year old woman in Brooklyn. We took her from the street to the GED test and hopefully she will receive her GED in a few weeks.
EVERY DELEGATE AT THE DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION SHOULD HAVE A COPY OF THIS ARTICLE. THIS CONVENTION IS GOING TO TALK A LOT OF STUFF ABOUT CHANGE, BUT CHANGE WILL BE MODERATE ONLY. THE CHANGE WE NEED IS FOR EVERY MEMBER OF EVERY FAMILY TO HAVE A DIPLOMA AND THEN PEOPLE CAN WALK WITH MUCH MORE DIGNITY AND HOPE IN THE STREETS OF CITIES. LET US THANK LARRY LOVE AND QUEEN MAKKADA FOR THEIR GREAT CONTRIBUTION IN THIS EFFORT TO HELP PEOPLE.
