It has been obvious to me that crimes against Latinos did not abate after the attacks in Farmingville. Recently I told the Suffolk County legislators that each and every one of them must tell their constituents that “undocumented immigrants” have lots of rights, including the right to attend the university and get financing. Since that day we must look at their actions. What have they done, including the Latino elected officials? Have Latino elected officials gone on the turf of other legislators and during speaking engagements told a conservative audience of residents that respecting the rights of people is important. This kind of information filters down to everyone, including young adults who may be leaving bars and/or buying beer from local stores to drink, which leads them to violent attacks. We have to hold County Executive Steve Levy accountable for his mistakes. He should have been leading this drive, but everyone is responsible. I am still waiting to do an educational conference at Patchogue-Medford High School which I requested.

I am partnering with William Bell, the father of Sean Bell. We are waiting for a date to appear in the White House with the NAACP national legislative director and others to end the violence, but nobody in Suffolk County is partnering with us. We just did a major event with other cooperating partners including Police Commissioner Mulvey in Nassau County’s Eisenhower Park. We want to network with Suffolk County and the rest of New York.

See my article “Marcelo Lucero Did Not Die in Vain” written in which I wrote:

I told the audience about how President George Washington wrote a letter to protect Jews, which can be seen in the Touro Synagogue in Newport, Rhode Island.

In 1939, two-thirds of Americans polled did not want to allow Jews into the United States and they were not allowed in. Latinos (governments) helped the Jews. The Dominican Republic permitted Jews to settle in Sosua.

While I sat there thinking what I could say that was of utmost or of critical importance, it hit me that I could tell the audience that all members of the Suffolk County Legislature can tell their constituents what rights undocumented immigrants have. By informing their constituents about this powerful truth, people all over Long Island could turn their thinking around about the undocumented or illegal immigrants. If this happens, we can turn around communities that are hostile to Hispanics and others. A Suffolk County Task Force could ensure its success and staff members of the legislators and community groups could start working on researching all of the pertinent information immediately.
