THE GED PARTY

By Profesor Martin Danenberg "El Quijote del GED"

There are threats that all people are informed about and one of the big threats that faces us is the ignorance of our leadership in government and community. I had a dream last week that I was running for Congress and the newspaper La Tribuna Hispana was going to make the announcement to the Hispanic community. As I got up from my bed, I believed the dream, but that changed with a good cup of coffee. In the nation's interests I have undeclared myself for political office. But wait! I have formed the GED Party instead.

Health is an important issue and radio talk shows tell us we have the best health care. Some of those shows tell us that our great health care will go downhill with "ObamaCare." This is what I know. For years the American people have been told that we need about 1 million nurses more. I have been recommending for six or seven years that we find some of those nurses among the "illegal" or undocumented immigrants. So we have lost a great opportunity because of both political parties. Where was the negotiation and compromise that has given America its greatness? It was not there. The Tea Party has nothing to contribute to important health care issue. We call for expansion of English language programs to serve those people whose native language is not English to make the dream a reality and to get more nurses out there to help our medical services.

Education is now called a "civil right." Even the men and women who say this are doing little or nothing to help the almost 40 million adults who do have a GED. They are not helping the family as much as they could. We want to end welfare, gang activities, crime, and other items that are related to education and help people get jobs and new opportunities, saving the tax payer billions of dollars each year. We call for a reevaluation of all workforce development programs, specifically to make sure that many more adults earn a GED. We call for the evaluation of all adult education programs that can lead to more productivity in helping the non-English language population to learn English. Former governors Mark Warner and Tim Kane of Virginia promoted the GED via new programs and PSAs and we call upon all governors to act now to help their people.

Growing jobs is critical for our future success. People are telling Americans that job growth can only be achieved by giving tax credits to business owners who hire new employees. Citibank is lowering the interest rate of businesses that grow jobs. We can up all bank to do the same thing immediately. We call for an investigation to find out if most businesses could have grown jobs in the past without obtaining any tax credit. Just because they happened to get the credit and grew jobs, does not mean it was necessary to get the credit.

Immigration reform may pass within the next two years. The Major League Baseball All Star game will take place in Arizona in 2011 and a boycott has been called by groups around the country. The GED Hotline called the office of Major League Baseball to support the immigrants. Undocumented immigrants have all kinds of rights protected by federal law and decisions made at the federal and state levels. We call upon all elected officials to make this known to their constituents. America was built on respecting the rights of others.

Foreign policy must promote education. Haiti needs the French GED and the GED should be translated into Creole. Latin America needs the Spanish GED to help huge segments of its population that has never completed high school. We call for an annual Conference of Secretary of State to promote the education of all people. No Person Will Be Left Behind.
