Tiger Woods had a golf teacher. We are told it was his father, but what if someone else provided the knowledge that was critical to his success before he turned pro? That person would deserve a lot of credit and so do his hired instructors since he turned pro. Sure Butch Harmon’s name stands out among people in the public for helping Woods, but the story does not end with Butch Harmon. It is the same with school instruction and no charter school should be taking statistical credit for great students because they transferred over to the school. Let us evaluate properly what charter schools are doing and subtract what is incorrect about charter schools to get at the truth. When a GED program has almost a hundred percent passing rate, you can almost bet that something is wrong. I still say let us look at these programs and the others on the top ten list and see what a predictor test for each student will reveal about success at the end of the year. If the predictor test predicts the same high results at the beginning of the year, then the school is not really that great at all. The State Education Department is coming up with a new plan for No Child Left Behind based on the same concept. If could very well be that traditional public schools are producing greater results. We have to see where each student starts off (based on a predictor test), use the same predictor test for all students, and see the result of instruction at the end of the year. All these statistics backing charter schools and/or mayoral control or even backing traditional public schools mean little to me.
