THE WEEK IN EDUCATION (9)

By Profesor Martin Danenberg “El Quijote del GED”

PAY PAL NOTICE
Something new in 2010. You can now order the GED program. It is so simple! Click on the word clic above my article (in the white section on the right). By clicking you can go to my website and find "Services" to order the GED program in English or Spanish. See the Pay Pal there. Thank you for taking this important, powerful step in your life. I really hope that a job or higher education awaits you, even induction into the military. Your future is important!

I went to a meeting close to Rte 110 on Long Island, explaining how to mobilize an entire community non- for- profit. What I found out is that the director feels my GED program would cost a lot of money and the individuals would have to pay $35 for my program themselves. It seems to me that the director will not change the program. First of all, classes have not started. Secondly, only people in class will benefit from the instruction and only when they attend class (they will be charged a small fee so that may lead to better attendance). There will be very few graduates from that class and people will keep going there every year anyway. Status quo as usual and the community will suffer from all of this.

I asked the director when the Official Practice Test is given and I was not given an answer. When I ran a program my way, students did the OPT or Official Practice Test immediately, their papers were marked minutes after they completed the test, and people who passed the OPT got a date to take the GED right away.

Graduation rates are up in New York City and Long Island (slightly…but the graduation rates are well above 80 percent). I do not believe that Long Island uses GED diplomas in its figures. Although the graduation rate is 56.4 percent in New York City, African American and Latino graduation rates are low in comparison. Counting the GED successes is important but the high school graduation rate becomes confusing to understand when the numbers are included. The process should be transparent and it is not.

Mayoral control may end without action from the Senate because of the chaos upstate. At the very same time that this may happen (it is doubtful to me because I cannot envision that there is no plan B that will take affect), the GED testing is falling apart again due to lack of funds and the closing of GED testing sites.

Graduation rates for Freeport 56 percent Roosevelt 61 percent, Hempstead 51 percent, Brentwood 63 percent, Central Islip 50 percent, Wyandanch 54 percent. Nassau has an 88 percent graduate rate and Suffolk has an 84 percent graduation rate. This is based on the 2008 school year.

The Catholic schools of New York City have shown a huge increase on the recent reading and math tests. They achieved 21 percent higher than the public schools.

My effort to bring the GED to Honduras may have taken a slight setback as the President of Honduras had to flee because of a military coup. I do not have enough information to confirm if there was a setback or not and I should find out more soon from someone taking my information to the government.
