THE WORD IS FINALLY GETTING OUT

BRONX GED EVENT 005.JPG

"El Quijote del GED"

The city that never sleeps is waking up!

Although I had met with Hector Gesualdo of ASPIRA prior to the publication of an article in Hoy in 2002, I was able to bring the Consul General of Mexico in New York City and my dear friend, the former Consul General of El Salvador in Brentwood into my GED campaign. The message I gave everyone is catching on, but the GED Hotline is here to serve everyone.

The word got out that Spanish speaking people should take the GED in their stronger language.

The word got out that youth who are 18 and who have been discharged from school for a year do not even need to take a GED preparation class.

I attended the Educational Conference in the Bronx Supreme Court building where I held my GED Roundtable several years ago. It was great to be with Jesse Mojica who helped me coordinate my event in 2007.

This GED event was about giving help to hundreds of people in the Bronx, including ESL preparation. There were short versions of a GED practice test in a few subject areas. Tests were marked while people waited and that is important. People signed up for classes in various programs in the Bronx. It was a pleasure to see Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn joining forces with other city council staff to make this great event. They talked about the great financial and educational progress that people could make through the GED.

I had a great time helping Spanish speaking people from Mexico and the Dominican Republic. While speaking to a group of Dominicans who were waiting for the results of their pre-tests, one of the women pointed out that it says "Ojalá Que Llueva Café y Educación en El Campo" and I told the group that I am more famous than Balaguer (just kidding of course) and Juan Bosch. I really was pleased to make new GED friends among those exhibitors, too. There were people working with youth and actual GED examiners there.

Ruben Diaz, Jr. knows that I have been there for years talking about mobilizing communities. I have done it in the New York State Assembly, the Democratic National Convention in Boston, and in conferences in New York City. The very group that I spoke to way back was Ruben Diaz, Sr.'s Pastors' Federation in the Bronx.

THE PEOPLE’S GED SUMMIT OF NEW YORK

By Profesor Martin Danenberg “El Quijote del GED”

This was the greatest of my GED conferences. This conference was attended by the educational chairman of the City Council of New York, the Commissioner of Immigrant Affairs of the Office of the Mayor of New York City, the highest ranking civilian in the NYPD appointed by the police commissioner, a New York State Regent, a representative of the office of Councilwoman Annabel Palma, non-profit organizations, including the Salvation Army, the YMCA, the Hip Hop Summit Youth Council, the Guardian Angels, the United Federation of Teachers, labor, the Civil Service Commission of the State of New York, the GED Administrator of the State of New York, a former star of the Harlem Globetrotters, members of various universities, including the Universidad Tecnica Particular de Loja of Ecuador (in Queens), the clergy, and the media, including HITN-TV which reaches 19 million homes in the United States. People came from as far away as Albany to attend.

A special thank you goes to Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion and his staff for leading the way toward the GED Revolution. It was Adolfo Carrion who brought me into his office and wanted me to do an event in the rotunda of the Supreme Court Building. I did not have to ask him for this great venue. Adolfo Carrion is a great friend of the GED Revolution.

Franco Rosado dramatically opened the conference with a powerful presentation of how the GED saved his life. He told everyone the “real deal” about how he went from a 90 student to a student that went from “everything good to everything bad.” The GED turned his life around and put him into the State University and then UCLA
Here is the truth from "El Quijote del GED" and while walking to the event on Monday I was thinking about the violence in the Bronx. A man walking next to me told me things were worse in Brooklyn. For every 100 gang members probably less than one person earns a GED in a year. That means about a half earns a GED before getting into enough trouble and ending up in jail or dead. The elected officials are finally waking up. Now it is up to them to get those disconnected youth into GED classes and into jobs that pay enough money to keep the youth out of jail. THIS IS WHERE THE PIPELINE TO PRISON REALLY IS.
