VIOLENCE IN MONTREAL AND WHICH CITY IS NEXT?
The violence stemmed from the fatal police shooting Saturday of 18-year-old Honduran immigrant Freddy Villenueva, The Gazette newspaper said.
It was reported that gangs of youth were roaming around the streets. Would it not make sense to help get gang members off the streets through a GED initiative? The French and Spanish GED tests could be obtained to help everyone and English GED services could be expanded so that 10,000 or more adults earn a GED annually. I have never said much about the GED in Canada in my articles, but I have been aware of this problem for about six years. I am ready, as always, to help people, including those in Canada who have not graduated from high school. Quebec does do an educational evaluation for immigrants that come into the country that I do appreciate, but that evaluation does not help the community enough, the community of people who have never graduated from school.
Quebec left the GED testing system years ago, but I believe it reentered it only recently. Youth need opportunities which are often not adequately provided. Many people believe that the opportunities are there, but they are not really. Here are the 2007 GED statistics for Quebec. Only 98 people took the GED in Quebec and 49 passed the test. There were 1,542,480 adults who have no high school diploma in Quebec. Quebec needs the French GED badly and for Hispanic youth there, the Spanish GED is also badly needed. The violence that took place should make us all think about the violence reported in France and other parts of Europe recently, but this time the violence did not start up among African and Muslim youth. I wrote about this type of violence coming to the United States, but it has hit Canada first. Let this be a warning to communities all over the United States.
MILLIONS OF DOLLARS OF JUSTICE DEPARTMENT MONEY IN THE UNITED STATES AND I AM SURE SIMILAR FUNDS IN CANADA COULD BE USED MORE EFFECTIVELY IN GED TO PROMOTE EDUCATION AMONG REAL AND REAL POTENTIAL GANG MEMBERS TO TURN PEOPLE IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. I AM CERTAIN THAT MOST FUNDS ALLOCATED FOR GANGS AND CUTTING DOWN ON CRIME ARE SHOWING JUST SMALL OR MODERATE RESULTS. THE PEOPLE OF QUEBEC HAVE BEEN HURT FOR YEARS BY NOT HAVING THE GED IN THAT PROVINCE.

MONTREAL (Aug. 11) - Rioting broke out late Sunday in a Montreal neighborhood where a young man was shot to death by police over the weekend. A police officer was shot in the leg, stores were looted and firefighters were pelted with beer bottles.
Several hundred officers in riot gear fanned out in search of a group of youths who ran off after torching eight cars parked outside a fire station in Montreal North, a multiethnic neighborhood with simmering tensions between residents and police. Fire trucks responding to the call in Montreal North were pelted with beer bottles, while at least three bus shelters were trashed.
Delorme, the Montreal police chief, said authorities would make efforts to mend the shaky relations between police and the community.
"We're there to listen, to understand what happened (Sunday) night and to avoid these kinds of situations," Delorme said Monday. "We have to feel safe in Montreal."
