WAITING FOR SUPERMAN

By Profesor Martin Danenberg "El Quijote del GED"

I do not plan to see this movie, but I did not plan to read the book about Geoffrey Canada's school. What I can see is that the movie deals with popular things that are always in the media. I could write my own story and call it "There was gold in the rubber room." These things (in the movie) have little to do with my campaign to educate America, the America that I know. I have not seen the movie, but tell me this. Do the 40,000,000 adults who do not have a high school diploma or GED count at all? Can they help their children better to succeed like the educated ones once they get more educated? Is there any mention of this in the movie? Does the movie have to be re-edited to include my information and then be re-shown in theaters? Does the movie include other solutions that I have been addressing that have obtained national attention, but not the movie makers attention? This may be just another weak movie that will continue to keep America weak.

We are being told that 80 percent of students entering the City University now are in need of remediation. That can be due to several factors, including the fact that students cannot afford to go to school outside of New York. So they enter the City University and their results get counted in the university's statistics. A study, for example, of the sending school, public/parochial/charter/home school, would be helpful to see the difference in each category. If we checked out all of the schools in the nation in the same way, we would have a much better picture of America's future success. Minorities and the poor seem to bring down the test scores in New York and it may be the same in other large cities. Then compare the schools in the cities with schools outside the cities. Then factor in the GED problem in those communities and the loss of jobs to our nation.
