WHAT DOES SI SE PUEDE REALLY MEAN TO YOU?

For forty years of my adult life, I have been hearing about the desertion of Hispanic students from school in the United States. Radio reports back then told people that desertion from school was fifty percent and it is still as high or higher. Most of the effort to help Hispanics has been put into the students that can easily be helped and the students that are really, really at risk (doubled for truth and emphasis) are not helped. My friends know that I have the answer and my friends who know that are few. I need more friends who want to make sure that every member of every Hispanic family has a diploma. The gap between Hispanics and Caucasians in education is huge and that gap is growing larger everyday. If the Hispanic leaders will not do more, if the Hispanic elected officials will not do more, if the Hispanic pastors and their churches will not do more, if the Hispanic non-for-profits will not do more, if the Hispanic newspapers, radio, and television will not do more, if the Hispanic immigration organizations will not do more, if Hispanic business and chambers of commerce will not do more, if consulates will not do more to help Hispanics with the GED and English language acquisition, then it shows that Hispanics or Latinos are not united and/or are often united for the wrong reasons.
AT&T has just donated $100 million to fight the high dropout rate in the United States. I will be in touch with its foundation soon and I urge my Hispanic friends all over the United States to join with me. You write the proposal for grants to get money for your community and I will provide the program and help that you need in English and Spanish. The gap can close in the next ten years only by educating the adults who have dropped out of school and who are about to dropout of school. It really is easy to help people with the GED. Even illegal people can take the GED.

Shakira, Juanes, Ricky Martin, and Alejandro Sanz. This campaign will help Hispanics, but not those Hispanics who live in your communities. Sure we need people like them to help Hispanics here too. You can help. You may not succeed at the level they will succeed, but you can succeed. Doesn’t Sí Se Puede mean just that? I hope you do not expect me to help every Hispanic in the United States all by myself. Please! I need help. Read my work! Read my plans of action for your community. History repeats itself and isn’t wandering in the desert for forty years enough? Am I just clamoring in a desert?
