WHITE HOUSE SPECIAL COMMISSION EVENT AT THE ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES
By Profesor Martin Danenberg
"El Quijote del GED"
The White House wants you to network with people and I want to network with you and all of your important connections.
It was great for me to hear so many people talking about improving communities and not just schools. People came from California and Washington State to attend this White House Special Commission event. I asked the White House what would be easier for the administration, to fund the GED testing with a federal stimulus so we can double or triple the number of diplomas earned by people or help bring the Spanish GED to Latin America as a great way to promote the efforts of the Department of State.
Three weeks ago in Santo Domingo, I walked from the hotel where I was staying to the Embassy of the United States, hoping to make a contact with the ambassador. Unfortunately, there was no ambassador there because the final work had not been done to appoint the ambassador. I looked up from the table and there was the newly appointed ambassador the Dominican Republic and I told him that I had been looking for him in Santo Domingo. Raul Yzaguirre and I spoke, took photos, and shared many new thoughts. I told him about the baseball and education event that I want to hold in one year and about my desire to bring the GED to Latin America. He now knows that Secretary of State Hilary Clinton knows about my work in New York because her senate office was present at my first GED Roundtable in the offices of ASPIRA. I showed the ambassador photos of a great patacón de espinacas and a mofongo de churrasco that I ate in a restaurant in Isla Verde. "El Quijote del GED" loves to eat. It was really special to meet Hilda Crespo of ASPIRA for the first time as we took a short break during the conference. I had no idea what she looked like and she was standing next to me. It is always nice to see old friends like Lillian Rodriguez of the Hispanic Federation and Cesar Moreno of the American Federation of Teachers. Hey Juan Sepulveda. You are an old friend, too, but these are people that have known me and my work for a long time.
Let me take a moment to tell my new friends and readers who I partner with. Feel free to contact them. These people can help you and your communities.
Queen Makkada is the most powerful woman in Title 1 Parent Involvement in New York City and she is in close touch with Chancellor Joel Klein all day long. As part of that collaboration, parents can get my GED Practice Test program for free by using Title 1 Parent Involvement funds. People who pass the practice test can go straight to take the GED and earn the GED before people in class do.
Alphonso Bonilla has an amazing Christian Ministry in Rikers' Correctional Facility, helping inmates to heal. He is also on Radio Visión Cristiana and this radio show is piped into the facility for the inmates to hear. He takes a question from an inmate each week and talks about it on his show. Bonilla promotes the GED among the inmates, of course.
William Bell is the father of the late Sean Bell. Sean Bell was killed by the New York City police the day before his wedding. We partner to bring educational solutions to those who are involved in drugs, crime, and delinquency.
Bobby "Zorro" Hunter is an ex-Original Harlem Globetrotter. He is helping me to form the "Generation of Sports and Education" on the basketball side. You can see my photo with NBA legend Nate "Tiny" Archibald on my website (thanks to Bobby). Bobby Hunter promotes the GED all over the United States as my Vice-Chairman of the GED Hotline.
Brett Scudder has launched a national cyber bullying campaign and he has done some events recently in the Microsoft office in New York City. Check out SISFI and TITSSN.
Pablo Lopez with Latinos in Information Sciences and Technology Association is working out of the Atlanta LISTA Tech center at a national level with a mission to educate, motivate and encourage the use of technology for the empowerment of the Latino community in order to conquer the digital divide. This is done by bringing various elements of technology under one central hub to provide the youth and other members of the Latino community with the tools they need to succeed in a highly advanced and technological driven society.
Nelson Castillo, past President of the National Hispanic Bar Association has his own page on my website. We have promoted the GED together on Spanish television (HITN-TV), in El Salvador at the first Presidential Forum of President Antonio Elias Saca, and so many other times over a span of nine years. Nelson has worked hard to help Salvadoran immigrants in New York and Los Angeles. Contact him.
Yesterday I was invited by people from Illinois, North Carolina, Texas, and Pennsylvania to bring my campaign into communities there. I thank those people for opening up to me. Today I am at home and I will not be going to the White House signing, but President Obama has known about me for several years since we had a quick telephone conversation when he was in Boston and my work goes on, helping the people in the United States. I help citizens, residents, and undocumented immigrants.
