WHY MILTON FRIEDMAN WAS WRONG
By Profesor Martin Danenberg "El Quijote del GED"
Milton Friedman has influenced America in the wrong direction. He apparently was not well informed about the GED and poor communities. If the adults of his time would have earned a GED, the American workforce would have been stronger and would continue to get stronger. Now we have 40 million adults who have no diploma and a lot of work to do.
Milton Friedman was not talking about the GED in his speeches, something real and practical that would help millions of Americans. He chose to talk about vouchers and in so doing he hurt the American economy because millions of adults have needed the GED to get education and better jobs. Even liberals make the same mistakes by concentrating only on the children. So there you have it in a short, simple paragraph. Milton Friedman hurt the American economy. Take that to the University of Chicago.
He said the minimum wage was the most ant-Negro legislation and he called it discriminatory. He meant that employers had to discriminate against people because they had to pay the minimum wage. In the same sentence he should have asked everyone to reduce their hourly wages so that we would all have less. All. The rich would get richer that way. Okay maybe the businessman would have to reduce his prices to reflect the changes made. Do you think he would do that in a free market economy?
Milton Friedman spoke about "bad" government programs and I see lots wrong with programs that are effective. "Earmarks" have been off the mark. Whether those programs continue in 2011, it is hard to say. Tea Party folks, obviously, do not seem to care about their neighbors earning the GED. At least not at this time as they are focused on lowering taxes and reducing spending. Maybe they will learn what is going on across our nation in relation to the GED and that there is really great low cost help available to people.
