I finally had the chance to impact on Wyandanch High School and hopefully the entire adult community there. I talked about GED and dropout prevention with the principal and teachers. This is a community waiting for a big solution so people can get help. There was talk of helping the youth in school and the adults in the community with the GED and my dropout prevention ideas. They know they have a dropout problem and it must be substantial. There are lots of students that do not return to school just like all over the country. We need to feed those million or so youth around the country the right information about GED. I told the principal and others that Alaska has been the best GED state. When Alaska was helping 4.8 percent of its population in a year, New York was helping about 1.2 percent. Since people love to see their team getting more runs and more points in a game, wouldn't it have been something amazing if New York had topped Alaska with 6 percent, helping about 150,000 of the 2.85 million who need a diploma, instead of a meager 25,000. My friends the schools have been to blame as much as anyone. And now there is talking about improving instruction (mainly) and providing some other specific improvements in the GED system and one of the reports still does not understand that the key to reaching those higher numbers is practice testing. Practice testing gives you the best of both worlds that you see all over the country. You see driving instructors telling great students to cut their lessons short and just take the real test to get their license and you see people deciding for themselves if they want to get places faster in life by taking the faster highway and not the scenic or business route. Millions of people among the 40 million should be taking the expressway to the GED. Heath Broughton calls his campaign events the "Man in the Mirror."
