Jews of Sosua Dominican Republic
JEWS OF SOSUA MEET DOMINICAN LEADERS
By Profesor Martin Danenberg
“El Quijote del GED”
Jews owe a great debt to Dominicans because almost 700 Jews were taken in by the Dominican Republic during the Holocaust. The Dominican Republic was the only nation of 32 Countries at the Evian Conference that agreed to help and it hoped to allow 100,000 Jews in. The start of World War II prevented the latter from happening. Come to see the Sosúa Exhibit at Queensborough Community College.
After all of the presentations were made by speakers (and being mentioned by Gregorio Malena of the Consulate of the Dominican Republic for my work) at the gathering of Jews, Dominicans, and others, I was given a chance to tell the people that helping others is a continuation of the history made by Dominicans in saving Jewish lives in Sosúa. With several surviving members and family of the original 650 or so Jews of Sosúa present, I told the people that if we had known that we could smuggle Jews across the Mexican border illegally during the Holocaust, we would have done it and it would have been supported by Jewish money. I called upon all Jewish people to support the right of the illegal immigrant members of the Dominican and Hispanic community to be united with their families. Let us learn from our rich history and keep history alive through our actions.
