Latino Hip Hop Bronx Community College
By Martin Danenberg - I used to give out Hip Hop cards for excellent work to my GED students in the South Jamaica Housing projects. Sometimes I would even perform my own “rap” for them. I guess that makes me one of the oldest rap artists on the planet. Please tell your friends, neighbors, family and people at events like these to get their GED if they have dropped out of school. The test is really not that hard and it helps each family support itself better when the GED is used to gain entry to better jobs and additional education.
The Latino Hip Hop Coalition brought their expertise to a group of students at Bronx Community College on September 15, 2006. When I arrived, a young man in the audience was rapping to everyone and this was consistent with the message that people could come to BMI and get help in the industry. The panelists stressed getting sound legal advice, getting an education about the recording industry, and completing formal education, including high school, college, and the GED for those who have dropped out of school. Mary J. Blighe and other famous stars have earned a GED (Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson, and Kevin Federline).
This event included performances by hip hop artists and education of health issues, including HIV/STD, high blood pressure and hypertension, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes prenatal care, hepatitis, teen pregnancy, and alternative medicines.
I attended a mental health conference just before this event and I found out that twenty percent of Latinas feel hopelessness and have suicidal thoughts.
GET THE WORD OUT! GET THE GED!
