Announcement of Latin Hip-Hop Summit at Lehman College
NEW YORK, January 5, 2007 – The Hip-Hop Summit Youth Council (HHSYC) will launch their long awaited LATIN DIVISION by hosting a Three Kings Day celebration in recognition of this important day for the Latin Community. The event will be held at the Umbrella Lounge, located at 440 West 202nd street in Washington Heights on Saturday, January 6, 2007 from 6pm to 9pm with an after party to follow. Your host will be Michelle Garcia, director of the HHSYC Latin Division; Bronx Boro President Adolfo Carrion, and Commissioner Guillermo Linares. Special guests include: Actor and rapper Fredro Starr, Senator Eric Schneiderman, Councilman Miguel Martinez, Hip-Hop artist and Pioneer Craig Mack; Cuban Link; Sano and others. Music will be by La Kalle’s DJ Prostyles.
The purpose of the event is to provide toys, clothing, gifts, hope and joy to Latin children, as well as educate mainstream America about the significance of Three Kings Day. Also known as The Epiphany, Three Kings Day (Día de los Reyes) is a Christian celebration that commemorates the Biblical story of the three kings that followed the star of Bethlehem to bring gifts to Jesus. According to the Biblical story, the Three Kings – named Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar – presented the Baby Jesus with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
The Hip-Hop Summit Youth Council Latino was created to help Latino youths and young adults address issues such as Education, Employment, HIV/AIDS, Substance Abuse, Literacy, Economics, Politics, Voter registration, Guns and Gang Violence. Through our Business of Hip¬-Hop program we will provide training and consultation to aspiring Latin Artists, Labels, Managers and Producers that are looking to improve their skills and fulfill their dreams in the entertainment industry. The Latino Division is committed to teaching participants how to constructively use their time, talent and the Hip-Hop Culture to improve social, political and economic conditions in their school, home and community.
Charles Fisher states “By officially launching our Latin Division and hosting this Three Kings day event we will kill two birds with one stone. We will be helping those that are less fortunate, while creating a vehicle that will be able to provide a host of services to the Latin community on an ongoing basis. It is our intent to use Hip-Hop as a vehicle to strengthen and unite the economic and political power in our Latino and Black communities. We have been working on this project since the historic Latin Hip-Hop Summit in July of 2003 at Lehman College and we are now ready to take on the challenges that have divided our communities for so long. As our motto states, we are Launching a Movement for Unity and Improvement” ended Fisher, chairman and founder of the Hip-Hop Summit Youth Council.
“We are looking forward to sponsoring a Latin Hip-Hop Summit at Lehman College. We are confident that through our new Division, artist support, political contacts and corporate sponsors we will have the who’s who of Hip-Hop and Latin artists in attendance to reinforce our message and support our mission to empower Latino and Black communities in the United States and abroad” ended Randy Fisher, executive director of the Hip-Hop Summit Youth Council.
“At this time of year, and on this important day it is important that we help those who are less fortunate,” said Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion.
“I am excited at the prospect of the Hip-Hop Summit Youth Council working with our youth in Washington Heights/Inwood and in general reaching out to the Latino Community,” said State Senator Eric Schneiderman. “I have enjoyed a great relationship with the Youth Council working on issues like the repeal of the Rockefeller Drug Laws and the dilution of the vote in minority communities and I think that the new Latino division will be a great asset to our organizing young people around these issues here in Washington Heights and Inwood.”
“Three Kings Day is a day of gift giving observed by many Latinos all over the world and I am excited about producing an event that brings toys, clothing, fun and joy to our children. This is a special day for Latinos and we want to use it to enlighten our children about its significance. Through the Hip-Hop Summit Youth Council's Latin Division we will focus on a host of social, political and economic projects that will improve conditions for Latino youths in schools and communities across the country. In addition, we will launch our National Voter Registration Drive to register 10,000,000 new voters by September, 2008. We strongly believe that in order for effective changes to be made in poor and disadvantaged communities young people need to understand the importance and power of voter education, registration and participation” stated Michelle Garcia, director of Hip-Hop Summit Youth Council Latino.
