Tom Suozzi is no Loser The People Lost

By Martin Danenberg - Tom Suozzi did not lose the Democratic Primary because of his ideas. He lost, most probably, because people did not deliver what they were supposed to, the people did not come out to vote on primary day, and the people were not really informed, including the voters.

This was not a victory for democracy, even though some people voted. It was a victory for a party machine, and it was not much different from what happens in communist countries.

In the district that I live in, a candidate won around 1,700 votes in a three candidate race. A couple of years ago, he lost by 20,000 votes to a Republican, in an election where 102,000 votes were cast. These same men will battle each other in November for the title they seek. If Americans treat the primary as something that is insignificant and not treat it like a Super Bowl, we will continue to elect the wrong people. People all over the country, now, regret electing George W. Bush and it all began in the primaries.

The main battle really is between building a government based on taking opinion polls of a district, county, state, or nation and providing real leadership. New York State needs real leadership, not elected officials and appointees who praise themselves, their party, and those they work for. Education is still one of the primary issues across the nation and Tom Suozzi showed real leadership in this area. His plan to provide state resources for GED would have helped every community where the school dropout rate is high. He would have done more than anyone else, possibly in the nation, in combating the domestic violence, drug addiction, crime, gangs, mental health problems of our youth (including suicide), and the extremely important failure of elementary and intermediate school children on their promotional exams. This is something that all candidates can learn from the man who failed to become the next governor of New York. Suozzi may have made some enemies in the Spitzer camp, but his career is far from over.
