Los Cabos, Mexico is located at the southern tip
of the Baja Peninsula.
Los Cabos as a whole consist of a corridor
stretching from Cabo San Lucas to San Jose del Cabo. Due to its
proximity to the US, Los Cabos has become one of Mexico's most

Hoteles
The breathtaking beauty of the natural
landscape in southern Baja remains almost
prehistoric: high mountains roll down to arid hills and plains of
stark serenity that extend
to the water's edge, one of the rare places in the world where a living
desert meets the sea. Hummingbirds flit among desert flowers, giant
iguanas sun lazily beneath soaring cactuses, and the hot sun is almost
ever present.
At the southern tip of this pristine
landscape lies a cluster of increasingly intense development. Cabo San
Lucas, San José del Cabo and the 20-mile corridor of land between them,
now known collectively as Los Cabos, lay in isolation at the tip of the
Baja peninsula until the road linking it to the United States border at
Tijuana was paved in 1973. 
International hotel chains cleared seaside cliffs and built enormous hotels in a style that
can only be described BEAUTY. Cruise ships filled
the harbor. Golf courses grew in a desert that receives only a few
inches of rain.
By the 1990's Los Cabos was created. Flights arrive at the international airport north of San José del Cabo from New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas-Forth Worth, Los Angeles,
Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco and Seattle.
Most visitors who stay in the center of
Cabo San Lucas simply use it as a base for sport
fishing and golfing. There are many pleasures to be had in Los
Cabos, which now receives nearly half a million tourists a year,
five times the local population. But most of them must be found offshore
or off-road. At the marina, boats run regularly to El Arco, at the very
end of the land where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez. The
rock formations are magnificent. Swimming and snorkeling are pleasant at
nearby Playa del Amor, or Love Beach. There are sunset tours
on the boats that depart by 6:30 p.m.
In winter, usually from mid-December
through late February, great gray whales swim down from the
straits of Alaska and Siberia to frolic with their offspring. Any hotel
can set you up with a whale-watching trip.
About an hour and a half northeast of
Cabo San Lucas, at the Cabo Pulmo Beach Resort, kayakers and
snorkelers have the company of sea lions and tropical fish.
The resort looks like a little village, and the landscape is largely
unspoiled. The resort abuts a national marine preserve, established by
the Mexican government in 1995, that shelters a living coral reef, a
rarity on the West Coast of Western North America.
A traveler's experience of Los Cabos
depends a great deal on where one stays. In the big chain hotels along
the corridor -- built by Sheraton, Westin, Hilton, Fiesta Americana,
among others -- guests are placed at a deliberate remove from Mexico, in
an international sphere of protection from its elements. You can eat
American food, watch American television, spend American dollars and
leave without having heard a word of Spanish.
If money is no object, Las
Ventanas al Paraiso is a totally over-the-top experience. One
of the most expensive hotels in the Western Hemisphere, where an
oceanfront one-bedroom suite is $2,500 a night. Situated in
the middle of the corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo,
it has a spa, two restaurants. That oceanfront suite offers more than a nice view: its own pool and
Jacuzzi, for starters, and a telescope for watching the stars.
Twin
Dolphin, a hotel of great charm and comfort at far more
manageable prices. Very little man-made mangling intrudes
on the view, only the hills to the west and the Sea of Cortez to the
east. A perfect beach lies below, and a short walk away is Los Cabos's
best bay for swimming and snorkeling. It offers something rare: peace and
quiet. There are no telephones or televisions in the rooms. The calm
that wafts over the clientele spreads and deepens as time passes.
Los Cabos Mexico Golf
- When it comes to
top-of-the-line golf courses, Los Cabos leads the pack. Golf is such a
draw that there are dozens of daily flights to the area, many carrying
passengers with nothing but golf and relaxation on their minds. The
18-hole golf course at the Cabo del Sol resort in the area called The
Corridor was designed by none other than Jack Nicklaus and ranks among
the world’s top courses.
At the nearby One&Only Palmilla, a hacienda-style hideaway once a
favorite of John Wayne, Desi Arnaz and Bing Crosby, Nicklaus designed
his first signature Latin American course, the Palmilla Golf Club, a
27-hole course heralded by experts as one of the toughest to tackle.
From towering cacti and deep arroyos to breathtaking views of the Sea of
Cortez, the course ensures golfers of every skill level a memorable and
exciting game. In 2004, the One&Only was also awarded the Best Golf
Course in Mexico from Conde Nast Traveler.
