CARMELINA USHERS IN THE SUMMER OF THE “MORENA”
Carmelina Vargas - By: Luis Vazquez - She is known by many names. She is South Harlem’s golden girl, Urban Latin’s First Lady, leader of Generation “n”. She is also the force behind her label, Morena Records. She is an independent franchise that has now been placed to be the sensation of this summer. Carmelina Vargas, the Dominican-born singer from Barahona is following in the steps of her father, a merengue musician in this heyday. She has the genes for success and is redefining Latin Pop as something more than what has been passing as good music.
She released her debut album “Morena” on June 9 and it has caused quite a buzz. She is backed by the creative wonder woman of publicists, Amalia Martino of the famed Blue Shoes Media, which has backed star attractions like Rue Melo, Steelo, T-Weaponz, and now Carmelina.
This album has been two years in the making. Since the very well-received single, “Mueve las Caderas” was released last year, along with the video which featured Bronx rapper “Boulevard,” Carmelina has been destined for success. LALA.com had this single listed as its number #1 listened to song and led ASCAP to highlight Carmelina’s album “Morena” as one of the most anticipated albums of the year.
The strength of the album is confirmed through Carmelina and her collaborators, former Trackmaster Curt Gowdy, Game G, and Coptic. The 12-track album brings a variety of styles from Pop to Reggaeton with a pure Latin flavor spoken bilingually on two fronts. The Latin market has been somewhat flat over the recent past and Carmelina promises to shake the field with something fresh and daring and ready for primetime radio play this summer.
