Reggaeton is Spanish Hip-Hop en Espanol

By Julio Lora — Like any new idea, hip-hop and its Spanish-speaking cousin, reggaeton (pronounced reggae-tone) have had difficulty in finding acceptance in the mainstream. Popular artist have names like Tego Calderon, Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, Ivy Queen and Pitbull.

Hip-hop's roots can be traced to the streets of American inner cities, where African-American and Latino youth struggle to find a way to express their experiences.

Musical instruments were unaffordable, but artistic expression still found a way to blossom. This music has evolved since the late 1970s and now has mixed with reggae to produce the hottest trend in Latin music, reggaeton. It is a blend of dancehall and rap, born in the housing projects of Puerto Rico and New York City.

As in other communities, this form of hip-hop has met strong resistance from the music industry and community leaders. Now after years of being looked down upon for being "ghetto," its record sales cannot be ignored. More importantly, the stories it expresses cannot be brushed aside.

Though many reggaeton hits focus on parties and dancing, the harsh realities of urban existence are an expression of the societal circumstances these young people find themselves in. It is unfortunate that violence is often glorified, but it is also unfortunate that it is a daily visitor to these neighborhoods.

I would be the first to say that I would not let my children listen to much of this music. Life can be harsh and the artistic expression that grows from it reflects this environment. Those who oppose reggaeton and rap should remember to "not shoot the messenger."

The beauty of this age of information is that the capability exists for all to be heard and that many alternatives exist to switch to if you don't like the beat.

Lora is director of community relations, The Housing Council; publisher of ConXion, a local Hispanic magazine; and a disc jockey.
