Shakira Gets Hip in New York and That's No Bull

On Saturday April 8, 2006 at Giant’s Stadium in east Rutherford, NJ the debut of MLS’ New York franchise make its debut under new owners and name. Red Bull purchased the former Metrostars and rechristened them Red Bull New York. They pulled out all the stops in the home opener against New England. Legends like Pele and Franz Beckenbauer were brought in. They secured Rihanna to sing the national anthem as well.
But the main attraction besides soccer this evening was the halftime performance of Shakira and Wyclef Jean. Wyclef set the stage playing Jimi Hendrix style rendition of the national anthem and doing some of his old Fugees hits. Then he called out Shakira! Shakira!
The evening was cold so Shakira arrived with a large security escort appeared on stage dressed in tight spandex pants and Black Leather jacket as she performed her hit “Hips Don’t Lie with Wyclef. She moved those hips and along with her background dancers in white pants and shirts tied halfway showing off their midriffs as they danced around Shakira’ s sultry solo spots and were a great contrast to Shakira’s all black attire.
Her performance before over 35,000 fans and several children on the field who crowded around the stage were bowled over in enthusiasm. She left the fans feeling fulfilled no matter the score that night with a permanent buzz afterwards.
