THE NIGHT THE PRINCESS OF SALSA BROUGHT THE QUEEN TO LIFE
By Luis Vazquez, New York - It was an electrifying night back in October at Madison Square Garden the world’s most famous arena. It was host to the 30th Annual Salsa concert produced by the legendary Ralph Mercado and sponsored by Mega 97.5FM AND AMOR 93.1. It was a celebration of the best of Salsa with Tito Rojas, Oscar Deleon, Grupo Niche, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, and N’ Klabe keeping things moving all through the night but the artist who stole the show and brought the Legend back to life was La India.
This New York born Boricua who not only was passed the torch by the Queen herself, ran with it last night. A few years back Celia Cruz , the Queen of Salsa, put La India, then a former freestyle singer with a voice from heaven, under her wing. It was a historical moment because Celia throughout her career sang with many legends but never let any woman share the stage spotlight with her. It was a defining moment for her as Celia proclaimed La India “ La Princesa del Salsa.
”
This was the first time since Celia and Tito Puente’s death that someone raised the bar. Wearing a beautiful short sequined dress, a testament to her reborn confidence in herself. The moves were fluid and the voice, which few can compare to, was at its best. The irony is that India sang old hits but no one felt cheated.
A pleasant surprise was a reunion of mother and daughter. Having had their differences over the years they joined as one, reconciling and showing quickly where India got her talent. The reference from India to enjoy your loved ones because time is short and one never knows when the end will come.. The power and intensity of the voice which emits from the deeper recesses of her soul cannot be measured.
So in the years to come, hold onto India tight because she carries the show now and is the heir-apparent , a living legend, one to cherish while in her prime and at the top of her game. She is the future of Salsa and it’s present. Of course the level of performance was matched by the production and organization of the event. The peerless work of Debbie Mercado in putting things together for these MSG Events is a look at how one gets things done in a stress- filled business. Balancing family and the music business, Debbie has pulled it of with a single-mindedness of purpose in making sure that all latin shows are coordinated correctly and professionally. Mission accomplished, again.
Which leads us to the next Mega-event at Madison Square Garden. The Megaton 2005 event at MSG this Thursday will have the elite acts in Reggaeton. Daddy Yankee, Tego Calderon, Don Omar, Hector El Fatther, Ivy Queen, and Luny Tunes among many young future stars will be in attendance. The organization of such and event will fall upon the talents of Debbie Mercado and whether it is a Salsa Supercard or the Roar of Reggaetons Young Lions. The Latin influence will be on display again due to the influence of the Mercado’s. Look for the report of this event which should be the “Woodstock” of this genre.
