Business 101 Seminars
By David Gurliacci A public-private initiative will offer three seminars next month in White Plains, especially geared toward helping Hispanic entrepreneurs start new ventures or strengthen existing ones.
The "Start It Up" seminars will take place at Berkeley College, with a networking reception scheduled for June 23. Each event will start at 6 p.m. Berkeley College, the city of White Plains and Wachovia Bank are co-sponsors of the program.
Al Gutierrez, vice president of the Westchester Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, said bilingual instructors are expected to conduct the seminars.
He said the seminars should particularly help Hispanics because they will be able to ask questions in Spanish and further discuss their questions with the instructors after each session.
The first seminar, "Starting a Business," will be held June 14; the second, "Writing a Business Plan," June 16; and the third, "Marketing Your Business," June 21.
"There may be some nuances that are geared toward the Hispanic community," Gutierrez said, "but at the end of the day, it's 'Starting a Business 101,' and whether it's French, English, Spanish - whatever - it's all the same."
Miguel Blanco, vice president of marketing for the Hispanic Business and Professional Association and associate publisher of El Aguila, a Hispanic newspaper in White Plains, described the seminars as a "great idea."
"Our community is very entrepreneurial," he said. "A lot of them (business owners) are gutsy and throwing themselves into the business world."
But many don't know all the rules businesses they must follow in this country, and that sometimes trips up Hispanic entrepreneurs, he said.
