Residents Near Yankee Stadium Have Other Priorities Than New Ball Park
"Guns or Buns" "Too Much Yankee or Daddy Yankee?"
NY1 Top Story With the Mets seemingly on the road to getting a new ball park in Queens, the Yankees could be ready to announce a deal for themselves in the Bronx. A new stadium has been talked about for years, and it's been a major issue for political leaders and residents alike. With a mayoral election coming up later this year, it's one of many issues we'll be highlighting during NY1's coverage of Bronx Week. Dean Meminger
A new Yankee Stadium right across the street from the old one - that's the dream of many Bronx leaders, along with redeveloping the area around the stadium to make it more attractive for fans.
But David Mojica, District Manager of Community Board 4, has a message for the candidates for mayor; don't forget about the people who live here. “People don't want to come and see beers being crushed against their walls, and public urination, and parking all over the place,” says Mojica. “No one right now is talking about those amenities and those issues of concerns for this community.”
“My big issue is with the schools,” Put more money into the schools so we can get a better education.” “The schools, they need more teachers and they need more books,”
Many residents and workers around 161st Street near the Bronx courthouses seem to talk about education and crime in the same breath.
“We need to educate our kids. I’m not making excuses for crime, but this is the reason why we see more crimes,” says one area resident. “In certain areas crime is just going up, no matter what the stats are saying. We need to get our kids back into school.”
“Security in the streets [is an issue],” “There are still a lot of bad things going on in the streets, especially aimed at getting young kids involved in the wrong things.” “Tighten up on the police,”
“You have all these kids in the Bronx, all these kids everywhere, that are in these terrible housing projects, in a terrible situation, trying to get their education, trying to do the right thing, and they are surrounded by this terrible, horrible atmosphere,” says another Bronx resident. “I want to know what the mayor would do to clean up public housing.”
Finally, one man had this message for whoever runs City Hall: “I hope that in the next mayoral race, whoever he or she is that wins, that they do the best job that New York deserves them to do.”
