TRUE POLITICAL POWER COMES FROM EDUCATION AND INFLUENCE AND NOT FROM ONE MAN ONE VOTE

By Profesor Martin N. Danenberg “El Quijote del GED”

There are three things on my mind these days of great importance to all of us. One is the recent violence in France that has spread to other countries. Second is the recovery of nations struck by natural disasters. And the third is now that Democrats have made some advances, what actually will happen?

Here on Long Island where I live, Democrats have made great gains. What does this mean for my educational campaign? What does it mean to Hispanics and others? I do not expect Tom Suozzi and other people who were elected to change much. If there is a deficit they will make cuts that some Republicans will applaud, but other Republicans will complain that the cuts did not go deep enough. If there are more scandals and in four years there certainly will be more, the Republicans will make that a campaign issue in four years. If there is a surplus, the counties can spend more. Do you think that any changes that these elected officials will really result in great benefits to us? Tom Suozzi has not really paid attention to my educational campaign and we have talked about that campaign. The same is true of Mayor Bloomberg in New York City. I noticed that in Suffolk County, Rene Ortiz may be appointed to the Latino Commission, but the same thing can be said about her too. “The more things change, the more things stay the same,” we are told.

In New York City a Hispanic community leader told me that Fernando Ferrer did nothing to improve the Bronx when he was borough president. Bloomberg mentioned that during a televised debate, but the Hispanic went further and said things had gotten worse in the Bronx in the last four years. During these last four years, Bloomberg has been mayor and he is responsible for the progress of the Bronx. Oh! By the way the Hispanic that I mentioned supports Bloomberg. It seems to me that politics is mostly about people and their opinions and promises and not much else. I do know that Ferrer could have done much more to attract Asian, African American, Caucasian, and Hispanic voters, but he did not. His references to “David and Goliath” must have fallen far short in the religious community. He missed a great opportunity to add that the drop out rate, which has been great for decades and not just in Bloomberg’s administration, has resulted in families that have had their dreams slowed or halted and the high school equivalency levels the playing field for those who have dropped out, no matter what age they are. I know about a forty-eight year old man who could not get a good job at Coca Cola because he did not have that diploma. Ferrer failed in getting the “buzz” on the streets that makes anything successful. Rap performers and producers know this well. So Ferrer and his campaign people hurt themselves, but do I feel that they would have supported my plan to help tens of thousands more people in the city each year? No! Ferrer did not have the vision during the campaign and probably would have spent four years ducking the issue. Ferrer lost for many reasons, and yes money is important in a campaign, but he could have fought harder. It is Bloomberg’s turn again and we have to concentrate on getting his support. He thinks he has a done a great job in education, but I give him an F in GED. So you will find Hispanics and non-Hispanics who will not support the education of a nation based on “No Person Left Behind.”

The riots in France will probably lead to some kind of civil rights movement in that country, antagonizing a large section of the French people that wants to go back to the old days. They will not change. They are like so many millions of people in the South and across our nation who have not changed. People will continue to do things that restrict the rights of minorities in corporate and private enterprises. The same talks about racism will be heard forty years from now in both countries. I encourage those minorities to finish school or take the equivalency exam that France has and go to a free university system. I am sure that Americans think that the riots will have no effect on the United States. Well my fellow Americans, learn from history. Look at how the rioting and events in Boston and other cities in 1770’s changed the world.

The recent natural disasters in the United States, combined with the fall from grace of President George Bush, should have alienated more people than it did, but people do not respect the Democrats that much, as seen by the people of the city of New York as they elected a Republican. In other elections in the City of New York, Republicans and non Democrats often only got 10 percent of the vote there. Just when I think the Republican Party is going to die out again, as I did in 1964 when Goldwater was crushed, you can see it rebounds easily and that the Republican Party has nine lives. No matter what terrible things both parties do to the people of our nation, they will survive. We cannot walk away from them. We need them. Why? They control us. They control the decision making process. But the people deserve much better. In college sports, for example, when there are violations, the violators are not allowed to participate in sports, but not in politics. In politics, they have the right to continue on no matter how corrupt, defective, or evil they have been. Remember the Watergate scandal? We are confused by so many people who tell us that our vote counts. Do you think your vote really counts as much as Bill Gate’s vote? Sure I know that sometimes that the vote counts, but it is rare in history. You believe that one vote counts because people condition you to believe it.

Can you actually see a Chinese, Indian, Native American, or Peruvian- American as the next mayor of New York right now? I am sure that a candidate coming from any of those backgrounds will get far fewer votes than Ferrer did. Remember that only one non-Caucasian has become the mayor and that is David Dinkens. Do you think that the vote is so important to Chinese and Indians? If you stop and think about it, isn’t economic power based on education and business more important to these people? The only sure way for people from those backgrounds to win in 2009 is if both major candidates are from those minorities. Can you imagine that?

As we repair New Orleans and other areas of our nation and renovate and improve the city of New York, government must invest in GED so that we can improve the lives of people, keeping them out of jail and moving them on to greater successes in life than elected officials are currently permitting by their lack of vision, comprehension, and commitment to the people. California cannot take four more years of Arnold, the South cannot hold back African Americans and the poor any more, and one hundred and seventy million dollars of Bloomberg campaign money spent could have easily helped one and a half million people get a GED and improve family life instead of being used to prove that a man could meet the challenges of mayor of New York. Bloomberg could have accomplished many of the good things he did by working from the sidelines. His influence and money would have accomplished that, just like Anenberg and Gates money have influenced the school programs in New York.

I would like to thank some Hispanic leaders who have really helped my progress. They are Luis Montes Brito, Margarita Escobar and Rene Leon of El Salvador, President Antonio Saca of El Salvador, President Leonel Fernandez of the Dominican Republica, Assemblyman Jose Peralta of Jackson Heights, New York and Assemblyman Phil Ramos of Brentwood, New York, Hector Gesualdo of Aspira, Milton Rosado and Cesar Moreno of LCLAA, Reverend Juan Castillo and Reverend Jose Lantigua, Zeke Montes, Joe Carillo, Adonai Morales of the NAHP and the Hispanic Press Wire, Emilio Ruiz of La Tribuna Hispana for naming me El Quijote, Ramon Soto of El Sol de New York who introduced my work to President Fernandez, Richard Betancur of Las Voces Latinas who published my first work, and Geoffrey Gonzalez of Ahorre.com who has published almost all of my work in Spanish and English. Some recent support includes Herman Mendoza of the Steppingstones Ministries and Alfonso Bonilla of Mothers Against Peer Pressure. These are Hispanics who want to see millions more Hispanics finish their education in the United States and tens of millions more Hispanics outside the United States.

Photo of Moisés Treminio who easily passed the GED after taking the Official Practice Test in the Consulate of El Salvador on Long Island. He has told hundreds of people in Raleigh, North Carolina about the GED and people will soon get my help there.
