Lehman College's partnership with the three-year-old Celia Cruz Bronx High School of Music has been recognized by the Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors with one of the first—and largest—grants to be made from the New York State Music Fund. The $350,000 grant will be used to support music classes, music performances and lectures designed to promote an understanding of the music being performed.

Students at Celia Cruz take their academic and most of their music classes at their Walton campus (formerly Walton High School), primarily using the Lehman campus for rehearsal and performance space, as well as for master classes with Lehman faculty.

The grant to Lehman will enable local musicians to serve as featured artists at the school as well as instructors in music education activities for the Bronx community, helping to promote understanding and appreciation of their diverse contemporary repertoire. Opportunities will also be increased for both student and community musicians to improve their skills, gain hands-on experience in performing groups and introduce their work to new audiences.
