Boys and Girls Clubs and Salvation Army GED
The days of exploiting young boxers are going to end as future Latino and African American boxers can fall back on education. GED comes to the boxing gym. Who would want to have GED in a boxing gym? I wonder how many of our recreational programs across the United States have a GED component for the youth, their friends and family members.
For community residents! It should not matter if the community residents are citizens, or people with green cards, TPS status, or illegal! Anything we do to improve the education of people positively affects the community. You need to know the statistics in your community and also if those statistics compare favorably with statistics prior to 2001. Your barometer can be 2000 or an average of three years prior to 2001. Why? Because there was a great increase in 2001 and a great drop in 2002.
The GED teacher has a power that few teachers have and we know and remember those teachers well. The regular teacher in the classroom teaches a course, but the GED teacher makes up for certain deficiencies and defects people had in school and puts a diploma in their hands, often dramatically changing their lives.
Boys and Girls Clubs, Volunteers of America, the Salvation Army, Rotary and Lions Clubs, the United Way, Police Athletic League, and other community centers should participate in this project now.
I know this is a hard thing for Americans to absorb, but the outcry about gangs that has been going on for decades (since my youth or before and I am 60 years old), the high rate of crime leading to high costs of incarceration, the overtime (and pension costs) paid to police officers and others all across our nation, and the theft from businesses by insiders should be on our minds. We are paying the price! We all want a reduction in our taxes now and my GED project costs very little and the benefits are great! Let us build stronger communities through the education of youth who have dropped out of school and through adults who want a change in their lives.
You can get information for free about a GED seminar you could provide in your community. The need is great. We used to help over 700,000 people in one year to earn a GED diploma, but now the number has been substantially reduced in the last two years (an average of 400,000 per year). This seminar is available to non-for-profit institutions and public libraries. It is only available by email.
Lenny Fillyaw is a retired police officer and trustee of the Central Islip Public Library. He is one of the biggest supporters of my GED campaign on Long Island.
You may contact him about setting up a boxing gym or if you want to help.
